Conan Exiles is out in Early Access on Steam, and one of the most important elements of the game is crafting. In the game, it's important to equip yourself with better arms and armor, as well as build up your base. But where do you start? Luckily, we’ve got the basics covered, from Knowledge Points to materials to recipes.
Understanding Knowledge Points
As you level up by exploring, killing enemies, and gathering materials, you’ll earn Knowledge Points that you can spend to unlock new recipes. You start with the Survivalist and Weaver Knowledges, giving you access to basic recipes for creating picks, torches, and clothes.
On the Knowledge screen, things you know are shown in green, bits you could learn are shown in yellow, and things you don’t meet the prerequisites for are shown in red. Highlight any Knowledge to see its prerequisites, as well as the recipes it teaches. Items related to it in the tree will also be highlighted in the full list of Knowledge.
Gathering Materials
Basic materials can easily be found just by wandering the world. Stones and branches are lying all over, while plant fiber can be harvested from common bushes. Once you’ve learned the Apprentice Craftsman knowledge (level 2), you’ll unlock the recipe for the Stone Hatchet, allowing you to chop down trees and gather wood.
Other resources require a bit more effort. You’ll have to seek out iron and coal deposits, mining the nodes with a pick for the ore you need. Then you’ll need the Blacksmith knowledge (level 10) to build a Furnace and smelt the ore into usable materials.
How Crafting Works
Hand-Crafting: Many basic items, and even some advanced objects, can be built directly from your inventory screen. This is how you’ll make basic tools and most crafting stations. If you have enough resources in your inventory, just select the item you want to make, hit craft, and wait for the item to be finished.
Crafting at a Station: Crafting at workbenches is just as easy. Here you have to add your materials to the central pool, but once you’ve done that the process is exactly the same. Finished items will show up in that same pool.
Bear in mind that some types of stations require fuel to work—for example, Furnaces need coal to keep the fires lit while they’re smelting. If you have a valid item being prepared in such a station, the soon-to-be-finished product will appear in the crafting queue.
Melee Weapon Recipes
Most melee weapons are crafted at the Blacksmith’s Bench, which is learned alongside the Furnace as part of the Blacksmith Knowledge. More advanced weapons will require you to learn the Master and Journeyman Craftsman Knowledges.
- Iron Pick (5 branches, 20 iron bars, 5 leather)
- Iron Axe (5 branches, 20 iron bars, 5 leather)
- Iron Warhammer (8 branches, 30 iron bars)
- Iron Broadsword (5 branches, 20 iron)
- Iron Poniard (5 branches, 20 iron bars, 10 leather)
- Iron Pike (8 branches, 30 iron)
- Stygian Khopesh(5 branches, 20 iron)

- Steel Poniard (5 branches, 20 steel bars, 10 thick leather)
- Pick Axe (5 branches, 20 steel bars, 10 leather)
- Steel Trident (8 branches, 30 steel bars, 15 twine)
Armor Recipes
Armor is built almost exclusively at the Armorer’s Bench, and like melee weapons, more advanced bits of armor require more advanced Craftsman Knowledges.
- Wooden Targe (16 wood)
- Light Chestpiece (10 twine, 25 hides)
- Light Wrap (8 twine, 20 hides)
- Light Boots (5 twine, 13 hides)

- Light Turban (5 twine, 13 hides)
- Iron Targe (16 wood, 16 iron bars)
- Medium Harness (25 leather, 30 iron bars)
- Medium Tasset (20 leather, 24 iron bars)
- Medium Boots (13 leather, 15 iron bars)
- Medium Gauntlets (13 leather, 15 iron bars)
- Medium Cap (13 leather, 15 iron bars)
- Steel Heater Shield (16 wood, 16 steel bars)
- Heavy Pauldron (45 thick leather, 30 steel bars)
- Heavy Tasset (36 thick leather, 24 steel bars)
- Heavy Sabatons (23 thick leather, 15 steel bars)
- Heavy Gauntlets (23 thick leather, 15 steel bars)
- Heavy Helmet (23 thick leather, 15 steel bars)
- Ancient Shield (16 wood, 16 iron)
Archery Recipes
Basic Hunting Bows and Flinthead Arrows are made by hand from branches, hide, twine, and stone, but all more advanced forms of archery including Crossbows (which you’ll need the Arbelist Knowledges for) are made at the Carpenter’s Bench.
- Shaped Wood (10 wood)
- Crossbow (7 branches, 26 iron bars, 13 silk)
- Hyrkanian Bow (7 branches, 13 thick leather, 13 silk)
- Ironhead Bolts/Arrows (10 branches, 10 iron bars)
- Razor Bolts/Arrows (10 branches, 10 steel bars)
- Fire Bolts/Arrows (10 branches, 10 steel bars, 10 brimstone)
Those are all the basics! There are far more recipes to be uncovered and items to be built, but listing those out is a job best suited to the excellent Official Conan Exiles Wiki.

Conan Exiles Thrall Guide: How to Capture and Place Thralls in Your Base
HomeGuidesConan Exiles – Everything about Thralls and their locations
5In the barbarian MMO Conan Exiles, you can catch and use your own thralls during the game. Whether fighter, archer, priests or craftsman; we tell you which thralls exist and where to find them.
How to catch a Thrall and use him in Conan Exiles
Capturing the slaves is easier than it sounds. First you have to reach level ten and unlock the skill “Thrall-taker” for three knowledge points. Then you can build the lesser wheel of pain and make a truncheon and fiber bindings.
With the equipped club, you then seek out one of the many NPCs and beat it until it loses consciousness. Pay particular attention to the white indicator above his life – if it is zero, he faints. Then you can tie it up with the equipped fiber bindings with a click on the action key “E” and bring it to your wheel of pain. Once there, you bind him again with the action key “E” to the wheel. Pack some food in the torture machine, wait a while and you have your own thrall.
Compress your os drive. Whenever the operating system attempts to a file to disk, the utility intercepts it and compresses it.
You can then place them freely in your base. Fighters and archers defend your area and can also help you out as support in the blistering desert. Craftsmen, such as cooks, armor makers, etc., are placed directly into the thrall-slots of each crafting station, where they reduce production time.
Tltr:
- Build a wheel of pain from 220 wood, 210 stone, 100 iron ingots and 30 twine.
- Craft a truncheon of five branches, five plant fibers, and five leather.
- Create fiber bindings of five plant fibers and five twine.
- Grab a truncheon and knock the NPC unconscious.
- A white line above the healthbar shows you what the thralls state of consciousness is.
- Put the fiber bindings on him and pull him slowly behind you.
- If you have to fight or sprint on the way, you can put off the bindings and the thrall, but always pay attention to the white line.
- Bring the thrall to the wheel of pain.
- Now you have to wait until his will is broken. This will be shown to you, as in crafting, with its own bar.
- Make gruel or other food, place it in the Inventory of the Wheel of Pain, and wait for the process to complete.
- If the thrall does not have enough food, the progress stops.
Types of thralls in Conan Exiles
The thralls in Conan Exiles can have different specializations. Most can be visually recognized remotely by what they hold. If they are armed with a bow or a crossbow, it is an archer. With sword and shield are fighters.
Specialization | Use | Appearance |
---|---|---|
Alchemist | Place at Cauldron. has orb receipes | Wields a stone mace |
Archer | Guards areas | Wields a bow or crossbow |
Armorer | Place at an Armorer’s Bench | Wields a Repair Hammer. |
Bearer | Caries items | Wears a large backpack. |
Blacksmith | Place at a Blacksmith’s Bench | Wields a Repair Hammer. |
Carpenter | Place at a Carpenter’s Bench | Wields a Repair Hammer. |
Cook | Place at a Campfire or Bonfire | Wields a Repair Hammer. |
Entertainer (Dancer or Musician) | Removes corruption and provides a health regen buff | Wields Daggers. |
Fighter | Guards areas | Wields a weapon or sometimes is unarmed |
Priest – Mitra | Place at a Shrine of Mitra | Dressed in blue and found at a Mitran altar |
Priest – Set | Place at a Sepulcher of Set | Wears an Egyptian mask |
Priest – Yog | Place at a Pit of Yog | Wields a Jawbone sword |
Smelter | Place at a Furnace | Wears mitts |
Tanner | Place at a Tannery | Wields a large cleaver. |
Taskmaster (Slaver) | Place at a Wheel of Pain or Torturer’s Worktable | Wields a Truncheon and Fiber Bindings |
Each specialization has four different levels marked with an I, II, or III at the end of its name, with the level four NPCs uniquely named. The exceptions are the teachers (apprentices, apprentices and masters) and the priests (priests, high priests and archpriests).
Thralls placed on a crafting station reduce the materials needed to make items and reduce production time. The higher the level, the bigger the impact:
- Level I will speed up crafting by approx 10%.
- Level II also reduces crafting cost by 25% (cost rounded down to lowest whole number).
- Level III is slightly faster than a level II. Some will give additional recipes for their race when placed at a crafting station.
- Named Thralls reduce crafting costs by 50% and increase crafting speed by approximately 50%. Will give additional recipes when placed at a crafting station.
Locations of level four thralls
The level four thralls are the best of their kind. That’s why we limit our list to these NPCs.

The search for Black Ice will take you to the most Northern part of Conan Exiles – take a look at our map for all the spawn locations.
In addition to the Black Ice nodes in the mountains, The Temple of Frost is highlighted as a place for Black Ice and currently the best place to farm it. What you’ll also find within the Temple is the Black Ice Smithy which allows you to create Black Ice tools and weapons. The downside to all of this is the Temple is guarded by Frost Giants and they’re not for the faint hearted!
What is Black Ice used for?
Black Ice is the equivalent to what Steelfire is at the lower levels – It allows you to craft higher tiers of weapons and armour. In this case, 2 Steel Bars in combination with 1 Black Ice and 1 Steelfire in a furnace will create a Hardened Steel Bar.
Conan Exiles Cold Amor
With Hardened Steel Bars you will then be able to create Hardened Steel Armor, Hardened Steel Weapons and Tools. Last but not least Hardened Steel is used to make Acheronian weapons which are currently the best in the game.
In addition to the weapons, armour and tools, Black Ice is also an ingredient to Black Ice-Reinforced building materials.
The Black Ice Smithy
Guarded by three Frost Giants, the black ice smithy is where you can craft the black ice weapons and tools. Before you can craft these, you now need to be level 50 and have learnt the Hardened Steel feat.
Once you have this you must learn the black ice recipe in the other room with in the Temple of Frost before you can craft in the smithy. In addition to Black Ice, you need Shaped Wood to make the tools and weapons. It also takes 3 minutes to craft each time so make sure you kill the Frost Giants before you start crafting!
Is it hard to reach?
The Temple of Frost is certainly a challenge to get to but the Black Ice nodes in the hills and mountains in the North are easily accessible to everyone. For example around level 30 I was able to run to the nodes on the North East of the map without any problems. Each time I could mine around 800-900 Black Ice and bring it back to my base in the desert.
The only real problems I faced were wolves and dire wolves as sometimes they can zerg you quite easily.
Final Thoughts
While Black Ice is a necessary resource to the top tier equipment, it’s actually extremely easy to farm and find (once you know how.) In my example above, 800-900 of black ice is plenty and you can easily live off this amount for a week or two. It starts to become important if you want to build with Black-Ice Reinforced building materials where you will need considerably more.
This is where you’ll likely take a trip to The Temple of Frost with a couple of buddies and leave with 8,000 Black Ice each.
